The NHS Scheduling Website 3.0
NHS Juice

About This Website
This site was initially programmed by Steve Levine (class of '07!) during the summer of 2006 and during the 2006-2007 school year. At that point, the website contained almost all of its present features. It was programmed in PHP, which stands for "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor" (yes, this is a self-referential acronym. No one really knows what the first "P" stands for). PHP is a server-side script that generates the HTML code that your web browser interprets.
Then, during the summer of 2007 and the early 2007-2008 school year, Steve added substantially more to the website because he had nothing better to do in his spare time. The new additions included spiffy eye-candy graphics such as flying calendars, sliding pop-down boxes, and an improved login screen. Steve also implemented a faster NHS People search, witty comments, and a fully-automated email system that sends emails at a certain time of day to remind people that they are scheduled to fill the juice machines. Many of these new improvements took advantage of AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript And XML), which uses Javascript to nimbly download small pieces of content from the server, thus avoiding the rather annoying burden of having to refresh the entire page every time the user clicks something. It’s quite magical in Steve’s opinion.
This website is capable of: allowing people to schedule themselves to fill the juice machines, hosting information on how and why to fill the juice machines, hosting really corny juice-related jokes, letting people search for other NHS members, and sending automated email reminders to people who are scheduled to fill the juice machines. If you have any questions or comments about this website, feel free to contact Steve.
Some of Steve’s hobbies are computer programming and playing the piano. He is delighted to be writing about himself in the third person right now. Steve is having a great time at MIT!!
